Millie Mabona Grace Odhiambo is a passionate and a controversial politician who has gained political muscles and relevance over the past. Her loyalty to the ODM leader Odinga is quite evident and she does not shy away from defending him.
Millie is a graduate of the University of Nairobi school of Law, she furthered her studies for a masters in Law(LLM) in Public Service Law from New York universities, making her one of the top lawyers in Kenya. Since then she is committed to social justice, a character inspired by her faith in human rights and equality for all. She strongly believes that she is a chip off the old block, having inherited the interest from her mother. She has been on the forefront protecting girls, women, the poor and the marginalized.
Still the aggressive MP stands to be the most respected, surprisingly several people do not know about her impressive CV. Even when she talks hard in parliament and do all the funny staffs, she does that knowing her papers are quite impressive and very few could be matching her credentials to ask her questions.
Millie has worked at the state counsel, Attorney general’s chambers- advising the government on legal issues representing the government in court for 3 years. She is also a member of the International Federation of Women lawyers, representing women in court on constitutional matters, family law, criminal law and also on the International Commission of Jurists as a program Officer in the Gender Justice Program for a year. Better still she is an expert and a consultant in the UN advisory panel on violence against children, WHO on Human Rights on Regional Health Strategy for women in Africa, UNICEF, violence against women program for NPA partners and other international agencies. She is the founder of Millie institute ( Maiden Institute of Leadership, Law, Innovation and Entrepreneurship) that trains on leadership. Just to mention a few the vocal mp turns out to be one of the well informed, educated and exposed female leaders in Kenya.
In her political life since elected as the first woman to represent Mbita in the legislature, she has been described by Kenyans as brazen, bold, brave, fearless and outspoken, a character admired by many.
She has come out as a fearless leader and an impenitent defender of Kenyans against some pathetic and uncouth bills. She was on the spot for fearlessly opposing the security laws and the amendment of the elections laws. She has performed her legislative duty diligently and has two bills to her name i.e The Victims Protection Bill and the In-Vitro fertilization Bill. In a research and study done by Mzalendo, which keeps track of debates in parliament, Hon. Millie topped the list as the highest contributor to debates in parliament.
Her popularity is widely spreading across the whole Homabay county since she is part of the NASA presidential campaign team in Nyanza. Her political future looks bright than ever, it’s not ending any soon.
Her constituency has recorded better and transparent way of dealing with the CDF funds, she has a track record of development in her constituency from all the wards ranging from improving health, building more classrooms, initiation better improvement of roads, youth and women empowerment, she has initiated life changing programmes for the constituents in her tenure among others.
Mbita had 34,886 voters in 2013 however, she thwarted her opponents when she got over 24,000 votes way far from her opponents who she gave a margin of over 16,000 votes. With approximately 51,453 voters in the constituency this year, Millie seems to be having an easy ride and the electorates are sure of re-electing her. She enjoys over 70% support from her constituents. Mbita has five wards that is Rusinga Island, Kasgunga, Lambwe, Mfangano and Gembe ward. However she enjoys a solid support from Rusinga Island, Mfangano Island and Kasgunga ward which puts her the most favourite candidate to win the parliamentary seat.
Rusinga Island ward has recorded the highest number of voters among all the wards with 11,969 voters, Mfangano Island has 9,080 and finally Kasgunga ward has 10,934.Kasgunga ward. On the recent past Gembe ward have been side lined on several developments programs, however the incumbent Millie has penetrated the area with several development agenda, several schools that had flopped came back to their feet through the mp. Several dispensaries and classrooms built to improve the lives of residents. Apart from the three wards Millie is likely to pull almost half of the 10,794 voters in Lambwe ward since she has a home in the ward. However she also have an outstanding track record of development in the area, including opening several roads and putting more support on education and women empowerment.
Never the less the incumbent won the just conclude party primaries and throbbed her opponents to clinch the part ticket. Winning the ODM ticket in Mbita is key for all aspirants as it almost certainly opens the door to the National assembly for the winner.
Just like Kimani Ichungwa has no competition in his backyard and likely to be declared by the IEBC as the member of parliament unopposed, Hon. Millie Odhiambo should be declared too by the IEBC since she will easily beat her opponents with no challenge.
