As political analysts and commentators would have it, a good County Chief, Governor must possess proper managerial skills but more importantly be able to balance the political winds in order to survive for the whole term and most importantly, implement and deliver on their manifestos and blueprints.
That the county heads have to be arrived at by popular vote has its fair share of disadvantages prominently being the party politics and equation that is essential in the running of the county, with MCAs ever ready to impeach and stamp their approval and oversight roles.
Democracy in its other side.
Political memories bring into aspect the situation of Makueni county few years back.
The party politics and equation saw Governor Kivutha Kibwana find himself on the defensive end; bills and approvals impasse, sabotage and impeachment just a word away, completely unable to work with the county ward representatives until in desperation, the governor resorted to lobbying for the dissolution of the county.
The Governor, H.E Prof. Kivutha Kibwana, then elected on a minority party ticket, and now having learnt his lesson ditched his party and is now defending his seat on a Wiper ticket, the Ukambani associated majority party.
Talking of Luo Nyanza and the stakes on the governorship, it’s a foregone conclusion that trouncing candidates with the party ticket will be a tall order, almost impossible. Given the party loyalty, allegiance to Raila and the individual efforts of the aspirants with the party ticket.
With the ethnic blended Migori county, the other three counties are Orange marked. Taking of Migori county, the strongman who defied the wave, Governor Zachary Okoth Obado made a spirited fight to regain his position in the party, having tested the murky waters.
With the Rt.Hon Raila Odinga on the ballot, campaigning against the ODM wave will be a tall order BUT what happens in the event that one independent gubernatorial candidate wins (which is very unlikely) it’s quite certain that the party will stamp its influence and in the end, the county will grind to a halt.
